These great hollow globes of artificial super-metals, and artificial transparent adamant, ranged in size from the earliest and smallest structures, which were no bigger than a very small asteroid, to spheres considerably larger than the Earth. (Olaf Stapledon, STAR MAKER)

Outpost in Space
Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows four views of the International Space Station as captured by a "amateur" on the ground. The ISS is one of the easiest things that you can observe, you can sign up for e-mail or text alerts as to when it can be seen from your location and viewing can reward you with changes in brightness and color. I've even been lucky enough (on several occasions) to catch glimpses of arriving or departing shuttles (when they were flying) or cargo vehicles!
