Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows the core of the Milky Way in infrared light, giving us some clues as to the structure and makeup that are hidden from "the naked eye" due to obscuring dust clouds.
(The term "Wisdom Stars" in the title refers to a game called Outreach that placed such objects in the center of the galaxy. It's possible that this concept was lifted from Ben Bova's classic novel The Star Conquerors, but I have no definite proof of that. Stories about the center of the galaxy abound, from Gregory Benford's Galactic Center series to Larry Niven's At the Core to Vernor Vinge's Zones of Thought. Reality looks as strange, or stranger.)
