Red Square

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day appears to be an odd sight in the sky. MWC 922 appears to be a square when viewed by a telescope. What causes a nebula to take an (apparent) shape like this?

Morning Stars

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows five (well, six!) members of the Solar System scattered across the view. Can you spot planet six?

Hidden in the Camel

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows close by (a mere 10 million light-years away) galaxy IC 342 in the constellation of Camelopardalis.

Overpowered

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows two galaxies, Messier 60 (an elliptical galaxy) and Messier 4647 (a spiral galaxy). The elliptical seems to almost overpower the light of the spiral galaxy (as well as most of the other, further galaxies in the frame).

Arches and Reflections

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows the Arch of the Sky (the Milky Way), auroral activity and the reflections of both in a lake. "Mouseover" the image for a constellation guide.

The Fall of Coffee

Was William S. Burroughs able to use magical powers and put a hex on a hip coffee joint, forcing it to close its doors forever?

Or was it just somebody else complaining about bad cheesecake? Or (as with so much today) rising rents?

You decide! The strange story of cut-up technique, out of phase recordings and the hexing of Moka Bar.

Galactic Assassin

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows a possible assassin, ASASSN-151h. 200 times brighter than the brightest supernova and (temporarily!) 200 times brighter than all the stars of our galaxy combined, this object could be the brightest object ever detected.

Elemental Stars

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day combines the familiar periodic table of elements with in what kinds of stellar furnaces it is theorized they formed in.

Northern Climes

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day points to a few deep sky objects found in a familiar constellation, Ursa Major (the Big Bear, but also known variously as The Plough, The Big Dipper and more). Look carefully and you'll spot a temporary visitor as well! ("Mouseover" the image for some guidance to nomenclature.)

Deep Study

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows Messier 101 in the constellation of Ursa Major. Discovered by Messier, studied by Lord Rosse and his Leviathan, this image combines the data from several space-borne instruments to bring new understanding to M101's structure and makeup.

Spaces

Works space setups of various creative folk through the ages. Interesting to see how plain and unadorned some of these are. Clearly some of us are overthinking our work areas!

Two-Tail

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day is a finely-detailed image of Comet Catalina (C/2013 US10) and it's dust and ion tails as it seemed to pass near Messier 101 in the constellation of Ursa Major.

The Sky is Falling

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day attempts to answer the age-old question: Why did the chicken cross the road?

Tuesday, January 19, 2016

Desert Planet

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows MSL Curiosity's current target on the road to Mount Sharp: exploring the makeup of the dark sand dunes found in Curiosity's current path (click on the image to get a "uncompressed" look; as it sits on the APOD website it looks somewhat odd).

The Dim Red Dot

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows Proxima Centauri, a member of the Alpha Centauri star system. Proxima Centauri is only visible through a telescope and is currently under close scrutiny. Does it have planets? Perhaps we'll find out soon!

The Wisdom Stars

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows the core of the Milky Way in infrared light, giving us some clues as to the structure and makeup that are hidden from "the naked eye" due to obscuring dust clouds.

(The term "Wisdom Stars" in the title refers to a game called Outreach that placed such objects in the center of the galaxy. It's possible that this concept was lifted from Ben Bova's classic novel The Star Conquerors, but I have no definite proof of that. Stories about the center of the galaxy abound, from Gregory Benford's Galactic Center series to Larry Niven's At the Core to Vernor Vinge's Zones of Thought. Reality looks as strange, or stranger.)

Clustering

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows a cluster of galaxies centered on Messier 106, a spiral galaxy in the constellation of Canes Venatici.

Wright Mons

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day brings us a more detailed look at a portion of dwarf planet Pluto, as imaged by the New Horizons 2015 vehicle (now on it's way to another target).

Links

Connections between Neil Gaiman's Sandman and the rest of the "DC Universe". Personally, when I stumbled across an image of, say, Batman, in a story in the Gaiman Sandman series, it was in a story that did less for me than the "pure quill".

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day is an infrared portrait of one of the Milky Way's satellites, the Large Magellanic Cloud.

Forgotten Decade

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day focuses on the 1970's—not the year but a portion of the New General Catalog—found in the constellation of Orion (and overshadowed by their more famous neighbor, the Great Nebula of Orion).

Wot?

Lego has changed it's mind about bulk purposes. However...

Lego said it used to ask customers ordering bulk purchases for the "thematic purpose" of their project, as it did not want to "actively support or endorse specific agendas".

"However, those guidelines could result in misunderstandings or be perceived as inconsistent, and the Lego Group has therefore adjusted the guidelines for sales of Lego bricks in very large quantities," it said.

As of 1 January the company will instead ask that customers make clear the group does not support or endorse their projects, if exhibited in public.

Sometimes a brick is just a brick.

California Dreaming

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows NGC 1499, more popularly known as the California Nebula.

Monday, January 11, 2016

Diffraction Pattern

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows a ring, a corona, around the Sun. This is not the corona that one can see during an eclipse (real or caused by artificial means), but a result of light passing through moisture in our atmosphere.

Sunday, January 10, 2016

Eject! Eject! Eject!

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day is a image from the long-lived hard-working SOHO orbiter. It shows a Coronal Mass Ejection bubbling off the Sun and into space. Such events can cause auroral activity in the Earth's upper atmosphere, or, if not prepared for, massive damage to our space and ground infrastructure.

Marked Spiral

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day is a Hubble Space Telescope image of NGC 1300 in the constellation of Eridanus. What lurks at the center of NGC 1300?

NuSTAR Looks at the Neighbor

NASA's Nuclear Spectrosopic Telescopic Array took at look at our largest neighbor, Messier 31, the Andromeda Galaxy. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day maps some of the X-ray sources found within that galaxy.

Comets, Comet Dust

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day combines several plates to catch two comets (and a lucky meteor fall—some comet dust, maybe?) in one view.

Well of Stars

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows the Lagoon Nebula, made up of an open cluster (NGC 6530), Messier 8 and NGC 6523. Globules show ongoing star formation, making this a well of stars.

Picture of the Century

A long time ago in a world now seemingly far from ours, a fragile robot beamed back what was called "The Picture of the Century" (see below).

(Images taken by that fragile robot, and others, by the way, are undergoing a process of restoration, revealing new details, which can be used to see how the unchanging Moon has changed since the 1960's. See another image below.)

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day might very well be the new Picture of the Century. Our home pebble, rising over the pebble we call the Moon. Maybe every politician should get a copy of this image to remind her or him how fragile a basket we keep our eggs in.

Outermost

Outermost: The Art and Life of Jack Gaughan; Luis Ortiz (Nonstop Press; 2010; ISBN 978-1-933065-16-8; cover by Jack Gaughan)

I picked up this book as it seemed to be the only one out there covering the art of Jack Gaughan, who, along with a few others (John Schoenherr and Richard Powers in particular) really dominated the artwork for genre books and magazines in the 1960's.

Unfortunately, it was something of a disappointment. It seemed to short when it came to artwork. The text is biographical in nature, somewhat scant on Gaughan's technique. It only really seemed to come alive when the author talked about Gaughan's interactions with the famous genre artist Hannes Bok (the section about Bok's death is particularly touching).

It is, as I said, the only one that seems to be out there. It would be nice to have had something three times in length, or larger reproductions. Maybe the future?

A Little Activity

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows the auroral rings (a new one for me!) over the dark skies of Iceland. "Mouseover" the image (in the link, not here) to get a constellation guide.

The More Things Change...

Now that American science fiction, past its majority, is heading for the peaceful middle age of an established form, some of its earliest adherents feel as if they had suddenly grown long gray beards; there is nothing more pathetic, I suppose, than the look on the face of an old-guard fan who's waiting to say something about Stanton A. Coblentz, while all around him people are talking about Heinlein.
With understandable bitterness, some have been driven to the extreme position that no science fiction published later than 1935 is worth reading—while among their younger colleagues it isn't hard to find those who will put the date still later, and argue that everything published before it was trash.

(Damon Knight, In Search of Wonder, 1956)

Swap out a few names, and this would be the gist of many online conversations over the past few years.

Aurora Australis

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows the southern (not northern) lights of Morgiana, SW Victoria, Australia.

Not One, But Two

Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day shows the tail and anti-tail of Comet C/2013 US10 (Catalina) as it arcs away from the warmth of the Sun.

2016: Active Listens

Late in 2015, I changed the way I "consume" podcasts. Prior to that day, I was manually downloading podcasts, manually adding them to iTunes, manually adding them to my (increasingly creaky and now much missed) iPod.

After that day, I started using an iPhone and the first "app" I added (other than the "apps" that had been on my Android-based cellphone and had iPhone equivalents) was Overcast. There are many podcast apps out there, but I had heard a lot of good things about Overcast (including from the creator of the app), so gave it a try.

As a result, my listening has grown...possibly out of control. But, I'm spending less time downloading/adding/managing and don't mind it back episodes grow: I can save them, delete them, add them later, etc., as I see fit.

Here's my list of "active listens" plus titles that are "inactive" (but still in my subscription lists in the hopes they come back someday). It'll be interesting to see what remains by the end of the year.

(I do not listen to every episode of every podcast. For example, if I'm in the car and a episode with poor sound quality comes on...I'll skip to the next. I'll try that episode again, later. If it is still unlistenable, I'll delete the episode. Same with subject matter: If I can't connect with the episode, I'll delete and move on. So many podcasts, so little time, you know the rest!)

"Hey, Fred! That's a lot of podcasts." Yep, it is. Three things contribute to this: (a) my commute seems to get longer and longer and local radio sucks; (b) still involved in a couple of projects at work that allow me to listen to podcasts (that will slowly change); (c) family goes to bed earlier than me and we don't have a "media room" so watching TV disturbs the sleepers (more time for podcasts!).

Still looking for a podcast that covers the history of the Vietnam War, including pre-history of Vietnam to current day. If anybody comes across such a thing...

2016: The Year in Graphics

Previously, I've had these listed under the various Year in Shorts entries. Some people (hello!) feel this inflates my count of short works (not sure why this is a problem with those people, but it is the internet, so there's got to be somebody with a problem out there who wants to share it!). As an experiment, I'm going to split the graphic works off as a separate list. If nothing else, it might make it easier for me to keep track of what I've read.

2016: The Year in Shorts

Many years ago, in a galaxy far, far away, John DeNardo of SF Signal started tracking his short stories read as a way of trying to make a goal of reading one short work for each day of the year. I've managed, more often than not, to match that goal myself. While the tradition has faded at SF Signal, it continues here. Time for a new batch of stories!

Number of Stories Read: 411 (out of 365) as of December 28, 2016.

(Administrative Note: You'll see in the previous entry for this category that there are a number of anthologies/collections that I did not complete in 2015. Some of them even go back to 2014. I regard these as abandoned. Some will be started again—from the beginning. Others will not be visited again.)

Sometimes I have swapped between formats, so the totals of those three formats may not equal the total for books read in a year.

2015: The Year in Review

Hey, it's January again? So, how did I do in 2015?

Long form: 154 books!

Short form: 800!

The goal for books is always at least 60, as that seemed to be my average when I was crazily working 80 hours a week plus doing Army National Guard on one or more weekends. So, if I can't get at least that far—I'm doing something wrong. So, I am always happy to get at least a few past that.

Short form: The goal is at least one title per day. So, I made it! Or did I?

If you look at the titles read, most of them are "graphic novels" (comic books for people of a certain age). I may split this into another "The Year In..." category on the blog. The question then comes with the "trades" (collected editions). Do I continue to carry them in The Year in Books, or only restrict them to The Year in Graphics? Stay tuned.

The plan for 2015 was to concentrate on non-fiction. Did I stick to that goal? Nope. Oh, well.

Best of the year? Some non-fiction (especially Peter Ackroyd's Venice and Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods). I definitely want to continue with these sorts of books going forward, as well as mixing in "harder" non-fiction.

Umberto Eco was another good read during the year. I have some more of his non-fiction, so I will continue with those and I have a few novels that are lined up for a re-read or a first read.

Arthur Conan Doyle added a lot to the short works. I plan to start going through the two massive annotated editions I have of the Sherlock Holmes stories in 2016. It may take me more than a year to do so...

I went through Neil Gaiman's Sandman series again, after initially thinking of skipping a year. In doing so, I noticed a few more things that I hadn't previously. And, I got my daughter to start reading the series (she is on Volume 8 as of this morning), so winning!

Biggest discovery this year was Mike Mignola, mostly titles in and around his Hellboy series. I have to thank my podcast co-hosts Jeff Patterson and John Stevens for this (our ongoing discussions on graphic works has really added to my reading list!).

On into 2016!
